Timeless and Natural Look
What it is: Engineered hardwood is 100% real wood. The top layer is a thick veneer of your chosen species (like White Oak, Hickory, or Maple), while the core is made of multiple layers of high-quality plywood or high-density fiberboard stacked in alternating directions.
Ideal for Bend: That cross-layered core gives engineered wood incredible stability. It is highly resistant to the shrinking, gapping, and warping caused by Bend’s dry winters and indoor heating.
Best for: Almost any room in the house, including basements, over concrete slabs, or over radiant heating systems.
Aesthetic: Available in trendy wide planks (5 to 8+ inches) and custom patterns like chevron or herringbone.
What it is: Each board is made of a single, solid piece of wood milled from a tree, usually 3/4-inch thick.
Requires care in Bend: Solid wood is the gold standard for longevity because it can be sanded and refinished multiple times over decades. However, solid wood expands and contracts significantly more than engineered wood.
Cautions After Install: To successfully have solid hardwood in Central Oregon, you must maintain a consistent indoor humidity level (usually between 30-50%) year-round using a whole-home humidifier. Without this, solid wood floors will develop noticeable gaps in the winter and may cup or buckle.
Subfloor Installation: Must be nailed or stapled to a wooden subfloor. It cannot be installed directly over concrete.

Wood needs time to adapt to your home's environment before installation and every wood species is unique. We typically deliver your materials 1 to 4 weeks in advance and sometimes longer if the moisture content requires it. We strictly adhere to National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) guidelines and your specific floor manufacturer's requirements so the wood perfectly adjusts to your home's temperature and humidity. We test the moisture levels of both your subfloor and the wood planks so they are compatible before we start laying any boards.

According to NWFA and top flooring manufacturers, a subfloor must be flat within a minimum of 1/8” over a 6-foot span to ensure a flawless installation. To meet these standards, we follow a rigorous preparation process:
- Secure the Foundation: We start by fastening any movement in the subfloor and countersinking any protruding nails or fasteners to prevent future squeaks.
- Precision Leveling: We use a 6-foot level throughout the home in both directions to identify high spots, carefully marking any problem areas.
- Thorough Sanding and Planing: We sand or plane all uneven spots in the subfloor to create a clean, smooth surface while also removing any old paint, adhesive, or debris that could interfere with our glue or moisture retarders.
